Eastern Leisure (BA)

Comprising some of the mellowest cultures in the world, eastern civilization can be seen as at least the great wise uncle, if in fact not the actual male yang progenitor to countless western subcultures and movements.

This was true from the birth of modern art at the turn of the 20th century in Europe, to the relentless drug addled pursuits of the mid century American beat writers for self gratification, self indulgence, and self importance - right on down the line to the free love psychedelic mayhem of the hippie movement in the 1960s and '70s.

The sun rose in the east, and the world was changed forever more. For the better? For the worse? Who can say...? But the East's profound Influence on these and countless other prior and subsequent subcultures is undeniable. So they must be doing something right.

Complete this program and you too will be empowered with the ability to achieve ultimate balance in your own universe. Or at the very least you will learn to view your failure to achieve said balance with that coolish distant Zen thing which goes over so well with art students, and so get invited to a lot of interesting parties.

Qi & You (pronounced "chee and yuu")
An introduction to the circulating life force and flow of energy as well as its relation to Feng Shui. Also, the class meets every Saturday in the park to do that slow motion dance thing. That is like... so relaxing. You are going to love that.

Also, if there is time at the end of the semester, dim mak will be covered. While counter to much of the espoused ethos of the program, many students find It comforting to know that when it comes right down to it, they have the skills to keep the man from keeping them down! Like Napoleon said, it's good to have skills.

Feng Shui (pronounced "fung shway")
Upon successful completion of prerequisite Qi & You, students will be prepared to explore this ancient system of laws governing spatial arrangement and orientation. The proper positioning of objects, incense, posters, plants, colors, textures, attitudes, etc... are believed to promote good vibes, good times and fortuitous outcomes both personal and professional.
